Whether you’re a college coach, a student athlete, or just a fan of the sport, these top five lacrosse players will be sure to keep you on your toes during the season. They’re all incredibly talented and will be making plays all over the field.
jessie coffield
Having a passion for sports was instilled in Jessie Coffield from a young age. She was a member of the Boston College women’s lacrosse team and also played volleyball. She graduated in 2013 with a degree in communication. During her time at Boston College, she was a captain of the women’s lacrosse team and was crowned the NCAA National Champion.
Upon graduation, Coffield was not offered a job with any broadcast outlets. She was encouraged to consider other avenues. She was also given advice about how to make a career out of sports journalism. Ultimately, Coffield landed an on-camera internship at CBT Network in Georgia.
After that, Coffield began her career as a sports reporter. She worked as an intern for the NHL’s Washington Capitals and as an assistant editor for CBT News. She was then offered a sideline reporter position with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. In addition to reporting games, Coffield also recorded video segments for the team’s website.
Brendan Nichtern
During his freshman year at Army West Point, Brendan Nichtern was one of the top college lacrosse players in the country. He set school records for assists, points, and points per game. He also was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
In 2021, he was a two-time USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American, as well as a four-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. In addition, he led the Black Knights in assists, goals, and points. He was also a member of the Patriot League’s Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
In his senior year, he is tied with Michigan’s Josh Zawada for the most points in program history. He has also surpassed last year’s truncated points total. He has eight assists in his last three games.
Matt Brandau
Having the ability to carry an offensive load is one of the most important skills to have in lacrosse, and Matt Brandau of Yale does it very well. In his third year at Yale, he has been given the opportunity to make a difference on the field. He has a chance to become the first player in school history to win the Tewaaraton Award, which is awarded annually to the best male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.
It’s been more than a year since Brandau last played in Yale’s cage, but he made his return to the Bulldogs in time to see the program’s first national championship. He also earned Ivy League Player of the Week and Inside Lacrosse Reverent Player of the Week.
Logan Wisnauskas
During his five seasons with the Maryland Terrapins, Logan Wisnauskas was one of the best players in school history. He was a key part of the team’s record-setting offense and led the program to its fourth national championship. During his senior season, Wisnauskas had 103 points on 61 goals and 42 assists. His career was also a record-breaking year for the Terps.
In the NCAA tournament, Wisnauskas scored four times. He was named the tournament’s most valuable player and helped the Terps win the national title. He was a key part of Maryland’s historic passing game that set the standard for the NCAA tournament.
He was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the USILA’s All-American team. He also finished second in the country in goals per game (3.44) and points per game (5.94).
He ended his career with 205 goals and 340 points. He became the program’s all-time leader in both categories. His goal count was the highest in program history, surpassing Jared Bernhardt’s record of 99 points in a single season.
Chris Gray
Despite not being a household name, Chris Gray is one of the top college lacrosse players in the nation. He was chosen second overall in the 2022 ACC college lacrosse draft. His ability to score goals on his own and with others makes him a force to be reckoned with. He’s one of the most versatile players in the NCAA.
During his junior year at UNC, Chris Gray broke the program record for points in a season. He also led the ACC in scoring with 49 goals and 32 assists. Ultimately, he earned the ACC’s Offensive Player of the Year award.
This past spring, Gray helped lead the Tar Heels to a share of the ACC regular season title and a trip to the ACC Championship Game. He was named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award, which is awarded to the best college lacrosse player in the country.
